Appointed across all three core services lines, Enabl were trusted to bring forward a conceptual idea of a space that a longstanding family business could use to showcase their history and the quality of the products they offer. The creation of a history hall and exhibition space was seen as a way to drive the business forward and to invest in the facility to support future generations of the family.
Careful stakeholder management was key with a clear direction listed in a Project Execution Plan to ensure that the requirements of the family were fully captured and that the design was fully informed. Cost planning from RIBA Stage 1 coordinated with the direct procurement and manufacture that could be offered by the Sykes team was key to ensuring that the scheme stayed on track from the outset. Presenting an outturn cost was important as the wider development costs had to be considered rather than the sole focus being on the net build.
The planning team successfully navigated the planning system which led to an approval without any pre commencement conditions to derisk the programme and allow an earlier start onsite date.
A cost and quality tender was selected following early stage soft market testing and pre tender interviews. Independent scoring was carried out by the team to select the best value tenderer rather than purely the lowest price.
A longstanding
family business
Established in 1862 Sykes Timber is very much a family owned and run business. They have been supplying high quality Hardwood
and Softwood for over 160 years. Initially in partnership with James Stevens, John Sykes established his own Company in 1862, trading from premises in Sheepcote Street, Birmingham.
Richard and Bob Sykes have been running the business since the early 1990’s and investment in buildings, plant and machinery as well as expansion into new markets has continued year on year.
In 2021 Joseph and Fred Sykes became the sixth generation to join this long running family business. They plan to continue offering outstanding quality of timber and superb service for many years still to come.
Carefully selected timberÂ
infused design
Exterior materials have been selected to be simple, durable, long lasting and showcase Sykes Timber. Our Project Management and Cost Management team worked closely with the architect to procure materials in line with the budget that fit in with the design, quality and ethical sourcing requirements of the client.
The result is a scheme that showcases timber and one that has already received widespread interest and has been listed on the Architects Journal - Mowat & Company wins approval for all-wood overhaul of timber merchant HQ (architectsjournal.co.uk)
